The American Kennel Club has carried out some research recently in which they were able to come up with a list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds. This research was limited to the dogs found in the US and revealed some amazing results. Every year this dog club carries out similar research to help them learn more about the dog breeds which most Americans are fond of. The list has been quite intriguing and in recent years, the most popular dog in the US has consistently been none other than the Labrador retriever. It has been the top dog for 20 years.

List of the Top 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds

The research conducted by the American Kennel Club has shown the following to be the dogs that most Americans love and are fond of raising, buying, or keeping. Some of the most popular dog breeds in the US include Labrador retriever, German shepherd dog, Yorkshire terrier, beagle, golden terrier, bulldog, boxer, Dachshund, poodle, and Shih Tzu.

  • Labrador Retriever

It originated in Canada and, as the name suggests, has been used by many people mainly for the purpose of retrieval during shooting spots. It’s used in competitions that are organized to show which dogs are obedient and which ones aren’t where it constantly performs well.

  • German Shepherd Dog

It originated in Germany way back in the 1800s. It was originally used to help with the herding of animals, such as sheep. These days, these dogs are known mostly as police dogs, in addition to helping with the detection of contraband, and also with herding.

  • Yorkshire Terrier

This dog was reported to have first originated in England way back in the 1800s. It has been quite useful in the hunting of small vermin in the past, though these days it is used more for companionship.

  • Poodle

This is a dog that is increasingly acting as a companion to most of its owners. Germany and the entire region of Central Europe are reputed to be its area of origin around the 1500s. It is also known as Caniche or Barbone and in the past was quite popular as a performer and also in the water retrieving.

  • Shih Tzu

The name Shih Tzu has its origin in China where this dog was first heard of around the 1800s. Initially used as a lap dog, these days it is loved for the companionship it provides its owners with.
